Renovatio Romanian Unit Gets 9.5 mln Euro EU Grant For EV Charging Stations

Romanian electric vehicles (EV) charging network Renovatio e-charge, part of the e-mobility division of integrated global renewable energy group Renovatio, said on Thursday that it will receive a 9.5 million euro ($10.5 million) grant from the EU to build 242 charging stations for EVs in Romania.

The grant comes on the back of financing agreements signed by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) and members of the EXpanding Performance and Network Density – Electric (EXPAND-E) consortium, which includes Renovation e-charge, the company said in a press release.

“The EU is financing this project through a 70 million euro grant, of which 9.5 million euro is allocated to Romania,” Alexandru Teodorescu, managing partner at Renovation e-charge, said.

Between June 2022 and June 2025, the EXPAND-E consortium is installing 2,100 charging points aimed at light and heavy goods transport EVs in over 450 locations across 22 EU member states, Teodorescu added.

Renovation e-charge will install up to 222 high-power charging points of at least 150 kW, dedicated to light EVs, as well as 20 charging points with a minimum power capacity of 350 kW, intended for heavy transport EVs – trucks, buses and coaches. The charging points will span 53 locations across the main corridors of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) in Romania.

The charging stations will be public, offering 24/7 accessibility and interconnectivity with the other members of the project, as well as other mobility service operators through roaming solutions. The stations will feature payment terminals, which will allow users to charge up without prior registrations or commercial contracts.

The EU grant also attracted private capital. The project secured a 30 million euro loan from an unnamed European bank, as well as additional working capital from the members of the consortium and a few financial institutions.

The EXPAND-E project seeks to expand charging points for EVs along the pan-European corridors, from the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean Sea, as well as from the Black Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. Making use of the 150-350 kW infrastructure, the project also aims to fill in the supply gaps along the TEN-T network.

Renovatio e-charge is part of the Renovatio group, which includes companies with over 18 years of experience in the local renewable energy sector. The group is developing projects in countries such as Romania, Portugal and Columbia, while also being active on markets such as Bulgaria, Poland, Greece, Moldova and Italy.
