The Federal Government’s Policies on Batteries

Battery Manufacturing

Advanced Battery Manufacturing Tax Credit: The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 provides a 30% tax credit for the domestic production of advanced batteries and components. This credit is available for both new and existing facilities, and it is designed to support the development of a robust domestic battery supply chain.

Battery Manufacturing Loan Guarantee Program: The Department of Energy (DOE) offers loan guarantees to support the construction and operation of advanced battery manufacturing facilities in the United States. This program is designed to help companies reduce the financial risk of investing in new battery manufacturing capacity.

Battery Manufacturing R&D Program: The DOE also funds a variety of research and development programs to support the development of new and improved battery technologies. These programs are designed to help reduce the cost and improve the performance of batteries.

Battery Recycling

Battery Recycling Demonstration Projects: The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law provides $100 million for battery recycling demonstration projects. These projects are designed to develop and demonstrate new and improved battery recycling technologies.

Battery Recycling R&D Program: The DOE also funds a variety of research and development programs to support the development of new and improved battery recycling technologies. These programs are designed to make battery recycling more efficient and cost-effective.

Battery Research and Development

Advanced Battery Materials Research Program: The DOE funds the Advanced Battery Materials Research program to support the development of new and improved battery materials. This program is designed to help reduce the cost and improve the performance of batteries.

Batteries+ Beyond Initiative: The DOE’s Batteries+ Beyond initiative is a cross-cutting effort to support the development of next-generation battery technologies. This initiative includes a variety of research and development programs, as well as efforts to support the commercialization of new battery technologies.

Other Policies

Executive Order 14030: Executive Order 14030, “Strengthening American Leadership in Clean Energy Innovation,” sets a number of goals for the development and deployment of clean energy technologies, including batteries. The order calls for the federal government to work with industry to develop a sustainable domestic battery supply chain and to accelerate the deployment of electric vehicles.

US Battery Strategic Action Plan: The US Battery Strategic Action Plan, released in June 2021, outlines the Biden Administration’s vision for a secure and sustainable domestic battery supply chain. The plan includes a number of actions that the federal government will take to support the development and deployment of batteries, including investing in research and development, supporting domestic manufacturing, and promoting battery recycling.

These are just some of the many policies that the US federal government has launched to support the development and deployment of batteries. The federal government is committed to supporting the transition to a clean energy economy, and batteries are a key part of that transition.
