Shortly after BYD celebrated the 2nd anniversary of its Dolphin electric hatchback earlier this month, the EV has now hit another significant milestone surpassing the 500,000 units production mark.
Launched in August 2021, the BYD Dolphin has achieved this feat within just 25 months of presence in the market. This renders a monthly average of over 20,000 units a month, not to mention the Dolphin EV has been the top-selling hatchback in the A0 segment in the Chinese market for 19 consecutive months.
In addition to China, the BYD Dolphin EV is also available in Europe, Brazil, Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia. Between August and December of its launch year 2021, BYD exported 27 units of Dolphin, while in 2022, the automaker exported 1,303 units of the EV. However, between January and August 2023, BYD exported 28,387 units, and this figure is projected to rise further, cementing Dolphin’s position as one of BYD’s essential international models.
Built on BYD’s e-platform 3.0, powered by the LFP Blade batteries, the Dolphin EV was designed under the “Marine Aesthetics” theme, developed by BYD’s chief designer Wolfgang Egger, who previously worked for Audi as head of design and joined BYD back in 2017.
The BYD Dolphin EV is powered by a front permanent magnet synchronous motor in two configurations: 70 kW/180 Nm and 130 kW/290 Nm. The motors are paired with a 44.9 kWh LFP Blade battery pack and supports 60 kW fast charging. The Dolphin EV can cruise for around 400 to 420km in a full charge, depending on the variant.
