Europe New Launch

BYD Launches ETH8 electric Truck into Europe

As the demand for zero-emission commercial vehicles rises across Europe, BYD, a Chinese multinational known for its electric vehicles (EVs) and power batteries, has introduced its new electric truck, the ETH8, into the European market. The truck was officially launched at the IAA 2024 event, as cities across Europe implement stricter emission regulations, pushing companies to transition from diesel to electric fleets.

Many European cities, including London, have already imposed hefty daily charges for diesel vehicles entering urban areas. In London, for instance, small diesel vans entering the city’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) can face charges of up to £50 a day, while larger vehicles, such as diesel lorries, may incur fees of £250 or more. These costs can add up significantly for businesses operating in central urban areas, and the financial burden is only expected to grow as stricter emission rules come into force across Europe. In response, BYD’s ETH8 aims to provide a zero-emission alternative that will allow businesses to reduce or even eliminate these costs.

In addition to the push for cleaner air, several governments across Europe are incentivising the switch to electric commercial vehicles. These initiatives, both at national and local levels, include grants, tax breaks, and subsidies that aim to ease the financial burden of transitioning from traditional diesel-powered vehicles to electric alternatives.

BYD ETH8 aims to be a versatile solution for urban and long-haul needs

BYD’s new ETH8 electric truck is built on the company’s in-house developed eTruck Platform. With a gross vehicle weight of 19 tonnes, the ETH8 is positioned to meet the needs of logistics, distribution, and sanitation sectors, though it is also versatile enough to be adapted for other applications. BYD’s approach has been to combine advanced electric technology with practical design, creating a vehicle that is as effective for city operations as it is for longer-distance transport.

One of the ETH8’s key features is its multipurpose chassis, which can be tailored for various operational needs. This flexibility makes it an attractive option for businesses that require a range of vehicles for different purposes. With two wheelbase options available, the truck can be customised to suit specific needs, whether for urban delivery routes or more complex transport requirements. BYD claims that the four-speed gearbox in the ETH8 is designed to optimise efficiency, helping businesses manage energy consumption without sacrificing performance.

Design and driver comfort

Designed by Wolfgang Egger, BYD’s design director, the ETH8 incorporates European design elements to appeal to this key market. The vehicle’s exterior features BYD’s distinctive X-shaped front and “diving waistline,” with low-energy “Angel Eyes” LED headlights that not only provide superior visibility but also reduce energy consumption. These design choices aim to blend aesthetics with functionality, catering to European preferences.Inside, the truck is built with the driver in mind. The cab includes a spacious cockpit designed for comfort on long journeys. The layout of the controls is intended to minimise driver fatigue, with a 10.1-inch touchscreen display positioned within easy reach, offering clear visibility of vital information.

A multifunction steering wheel adds further convenience, allowing drivers to access various controls without taking their hands off the wheel. Additionally, the cab features multiple storage compartments and even a sleeping area, highlighting the ETH8’s suitability for long-distance transport.

Innovation in the powertrainWhat sets the ETH8 apart from many of its competitors is its powertrain, which has been entirely developed in-house by BYD. The ETH8 is equipped with a deeply integrated electric platform, which includes a 5-in-1 motor controller system. This innovative feature consolidates multiple components into one unit, making maintenance more straightforward and reducing vehicle downtime. According to BYD, this integration improves efficiency and enhances the overall performance of the vehicle.

The ETH8 also features an e-Axle, which combines the axle with a two-speed gearbox, allowing for more than 90% energy efficiency from the battery to the powertrain. This setup also enables regenerative braking, which helps recover energy during deceleration and braking, further extending the truck’s range and reducing the strain on the battery.BYD’s Iron-Phosphate battery technology, which has been in development for nearly three decades, powers the ETH8. These batteries are known for their stability and safety, offering an environmentally friendly, cobalt-free option. The battery pack can be charged from 20% to 100% in just two hours, providing a range of approximately 250 kilometres, making it suitable for both urban operations and longer journeys.

Safety and technology features

Safety is a critical aspect of the ETH8’s design. In addition to the Iron-Phosphate battery’s stability, the truck is equipped with a body controller system and a Smart Pad touchscreen that provides real-time information on the vehicle’s status. These features help ensure that drivers and fleet managers can monitor the vehicle’s performance and address any issues promptly.

The ETH8 also comes with various standard features aimed at improving the driving experience. These include an 8-inch information screen, electrohydraulic power steering, and an economy driving mode that helps maximise energy efficiency during operation.

A step toward zero emissions

BYD’s entry into the European electric truck market comes at a time when many businesses are looking for sustainable transport solutions. With its versatile design, advanced electric platform, and driver-focused features, the ETH8 presents an attractive option for companies looking to reduce their carbon footprint and cut operating costs associated with diesel vehicles.

The company’s broader commitment to sustainability is reflected in its business model, which covers energy generation and storage, alongside its role as a manufacturer of zero-emission vehicles. Founded in 1995, BYD has grown to become one of the largest producers of electric vehicles in the world, with a presence in over 90 countries across six continents. Its focus on reducing global reliance on fossil fuels aligns with the increasing regulatory pressures businesses face to adopt greener technologies.
