Drivers of EVs on American roads now have new fast charging locations available as GM announced the opening of 17 EV charging stations today in partnership with Pilot Travel Centers LLC and EVgo Inc.
The announcement further indicates that a total of 25 EV charging stations equipped with GM Energy chargers are slated to be opened before December 31st, 2023.An EV at a GM Energy and Flying J fast charging station.
The first 17 charging stations are now operational in 13 states, spearheading a fast charging network that will eventually extend nationwide in the USA. Each charging station will include four fast charging stalls offering 350 kW chargers, for a total of 100 stalls available in the initial 25 stations open by year’s end.
The General and its partners will accelerate expansion of the network in 2024, aiming for 200 stations with 800 individual charging stalls by the end of the year. The network will eventually encompass 500 stations and 2,000 charging stalls, and will be co-branded with the GM Energy and Pilot and Flying J travel center brands.
Charging a Chevy Silverado EV,Each of the locations will include pull-through charging stalls so that EVs towing trailers can charge up without experiencing any difficulty in leaving afterward. In addition to supplying 350 kW of fast charging, the chargers will support Plug and Charge functionality. Drivers will be shielded from the weather by canopies, presumably similar to gas station canopies.
The chargers will be positioned in well-lit, central areas and watched by onsite staff to lessen the risk of crime. Each charging location offers a range of amenities as well. These include restrooms, the option to buy food and beverages at the site, and free Wi-Fi Internet connections.A 2024 Chevy Silverado EV charging.The VP of GM Energy, Wade Sheffer, said that the “new network will provide EV drivers with a quality charging experience and greater peace of mind during road trips.” He noted that having more fast charging stations available will encourage single-vehicle drivers to switch their transport from an ICE vehicle to an EV.
Echoing Sheffer’s comments, EVgo COO Dennis Kish remarked, that with “robust amenities, optimal corridor locations, high-power charging and more, our collaboration with GM and Pilot Company puts drivers first and boosts range confidence.”
