Honda has been slow to jump on EVs, but its recent moves suggest that it’s finally ready to go. The automaker partnered with General Motors on its Prologue EV, will jointly release a car with Sony and has its own line of electric models planned for the next few years. As part of that push, we’re learning that at least a couple of new models will be sports cars, a revelation that has many wondering if we’re about to see the rebirth of the iconic S2000 as an EV.
Honda’s already confirmed that two of the 30 new electric models would be sports cars, and we know that one will be a halo car like the Acura NSX. Speaking with Autocar, Honda Europe VP Tom Gardner said, “We love performance, and we’re very grateful for the strong reaction we’ve had to the latest Type R. There is huge demand for it, and the performance has been very well appreciated.”
As Autocar pointed out, rumors of a new S2000 have swirled for years. Honda’s previous CEO even said that the company would respond quickly with new sports cars if the demand was there, but it’s unclear if that statement relates to the rumors we’re hearing now. The company’s engineers have also confirmed that the brand has an unbreakable bond with the Type R name, so there’s a high likelihood of a hot-hatch EV in the future.
Regarding when we might get a hot Honda EV, the news could come this year. Gardner told Autocar that 2023 is the brand’s 75th anniversary, noting that the S2000 came on its 50th anniversary. “Who knows,” he said, and while that’s not a beaming admission that a sports car is coming, it’s certainly a strong hint that the automaker has big plans up its sleeve for the electrified future.
