What Is Slate? A Stealthy New American EV Automaker Promises To Be A ‘Game-Changer’

What? You don’t know Slate? Okay, neither did we until a couple of weeks ago, and to be honest, we still don’t know much at this point. We’ve learned that Slate is a new US company focused on EV technology that appears to be gearing up for something big—just as soon as it steps out from behind the curtain of a clandestine website and divulges what it’s actually working on. Here’s what we know.

Since this new automaker(?) was seemingly founded relatively recently, there isn’t much background to share because, well, it doesn’t have a history… yet. According to Slate Auto’s LinkedIn page, which was verified on March 5, 2025, it is a motor vehicle manufacturer based in Troy, Michigan, that is “exploring opportunities in the electric vehicle space.”

Despite its infancy, the page states Slate has already established a team of 200 to 500 employees and has 46 additional roles currently listed as seeking hire. Many of those roles are administrative, but some, such as plant manager and suspension engineer, hint that Slate is working on EVs… or at least one EV.

Whether that means Slate is planning to emerge from the internet mire as a bonafide new American EV brand, or sell its tech to other OEMs remains unknown, but there are plenty more answers on its newly published website.

Oh wait, no, there aren’t!

Vague, right?

While I applaud Slate’s creative and clandestine approach to teasing “mold-breaking” EV technology, they aren’t giving me much to work with as a journalist. That’s fine, Slate; keep your secrets… for now. I’ll be the guy shaking the fence outside 2716 Daley Dr, Troy, Michigan 48083, screaming, “LET ME IN!” like Eric Andre.

After being intrigued by word of a new company in Michigan recruiting a team from other US automakers, I signed up for Slate’s updates in hopes of learning more. This young company should sell carrots because it already has a knack for dangling them in front of the public.

The site uses playfully vague phrases like “the next generation of innovation in the industry.” What industry, you ask? Well, that’s simple, “The [REDACTED] industry.” From LinkedIn, we’ve gathered Slate’s presence will be in the EV industry, but its role and capacity remain huge question marks.

So, what is Slate exactly? I’m sorry to inform you that even after off-the-record conversations with industry veterans, we still don’t quite know. But it’s something, and that’s exciting for now. We will all learn more in less than a month, as the very bottom of Slate’s website has a countdown, which, by my (awful) math, points to April 24 or so for a full reveal.

I’ll be staring at this countdown for the next 26+ days to make sure I don’t miss anything new. You can circle back with Electrek in late April for the full scoop, though.
