Kia Introduces Plug&charge Technology For Electric Vehicles In Europe

Kia is set to launch Plug&Charge technology for its electric vehicles in Europe, starting with the EV9. This innovative charging technology allows Kia customers to easily connect their EV with any Plug&Charge capable public charging station, without the need for any additional identification or intermediate steps. The authentication process is fully automated, making it fast, secure, and convenient for customers.

With the introduction of Plug&Charge to its EV lineup, Kia aims to provide its customers with the latest advancements in charging technology, making the switch to sustainable mobility easier. Sjoerd Knipping, Vice President of Marketing and Product at Kia Europe, highlights the convenience and efficiency of Plug&Charge, stating, “By offering our customers electric vehicles as well as the most advanced charging solutions, we’re smoothing the way for the switch to sustainable mobility, as well as proving ourselves to be serious contenders in the highly competitive EV market in Europe.”

Plug&Charge is an identification method integrated directly into the vehicle, enabling seamless communication between the car and Plug&Charge capable charging stations. Customers can simply connect their vehicle to the charging station to initiate the charging process automatically. Prior to the introduction of Plug&Charge, customers had to verify their account at the charging point using an RFID card or a mobile app like Kia Charge.

This new technology ensures security throughout the charging process by facilitating an automated exchange of digital certificates between the car and charger. The customer’s Kia Charge account is identified, along with the associated charging contract, without the need for any additional steps. The communication between the car and charger follows the international standard ISO 15118 and is managed by the Hubject Plug&Charge ecosystem.

While Plug&Charge simplifies the charging process, Kia does not neglect the benefits of their Kia Charge app. The app provides navigation features, real-time updates on charging fees and availability, as well as filter options to help EV drivers locate suitable charging infrastructure quickly. After charging is complete, customers can disconnect their vehicle and the payment will be conveniently added to their monthly bill as per the terms of their contract.

Kia’s partnership with mobility providers, Plug&Charge service providers, and network partners like IONITY further enhances the customer experience. With the addition of Plug&Charge to Kia’s portfolio of advanced charging technologies, including Kia Connect and Kia Charge, Kia is making sustainable mobility more accessible and convenient for its customers.
