Whether it’s a discontinued menu item at your favorite restaurant or a foreign market vehicle that will never make it stateside, it always hurts to want something that you can’t have. Both the Ranger plug-in hybrid and Ranger Super Duty can now officially be added to the latter list, as Ford has confirmed that neither of the new and desirable foreign-market variants of its mid-size pickup will make it to America. This isn’t exactly new news, as Ford has never said that either model would reach U.S. soil, but that still hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from churning.
While many manufacturers are shifting their focus away from full battery-electric vehicles and embracing plug-in hybrids as a more suitable solution in the current automotive climate, the Ranger PHEV was always the less likely of the two models to be sold in the United States due to Ford’s existing catalog of hybrid and electric pickups available domestically. During a recent media event, Ford confirmed that that is the primary reason for not expanding the American Ranger lineup to include a PHEV model, saying the traditional hybrid variants of the Maverick and F-150—in addition to the electric F-150 Lightning—offer suitable alternatives for customers who would be interested in the Ranger PHEV.
It is a similar story for the Ranger Super Duty, as the company says the half-ton F-150 and heavy-duty F-series Super Duty already offer customers capable work trucks that are better suited for the U.S. market. Still, there was some speculation that the Ranger Super Duty might make a stateside appearance after a pre-production model was spotted testing in Michigan, but we can now put that rumor to bed.
While customers in the U.S. have a wide selection of Ford pickups to choose from, other international markets are limited to just the Ranger, which is the bestselling truck in 21 of the 180 markets where it’s sold. With limited pickup options in many of those markets, it makes sense for the Blue Oval to extend the model range to include more diverse models where other alternatives aren’t available.
